Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, has overtaken Tripoli and Algiers to be ranked 170 out of 173 cities in the 2023 Global Liveability Index report by the Economist Intelligence United (EIU), the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, a United Kingdom-based media outfit.

The latest report is an improvement from Lagos’ previous bottom two ranking in 2022.

With this, Lagos is only better than Algiers, Tripoli and Damascus in terms of living conditions in the world. The four cities are bottom four on a list that x-rayed 173 cities around the world.

Between 2019 and 2021, Lagos had ranked the second worst city to live in in the world. During the period, the commercial city had the lowest ratings in terms of stability and healthcare.

In the most recent report, however, the EIU noted that the city had made significant improvements in its healthcare and education sector.

The liveability index, according to the EIU, is used to assess locations around the world in terms of living conditions. Ratings are also carried out, using stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure as yardsticks.
