The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, which claimed the lives of at least 10 people, including children, on Saturday.
In a heartfelt statement issued by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, the association extended its condolences to the Catholic Church and the families of the deceased, emphasizing that the tragedy represents a significant loss to the affected families and the nation at large.
“This tragedy is not just about numbers; it is about real families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the Catholic Church and all those impacted by this heartbreaking incident,” Archbishop Okoh said.
The incident occurred as people gathered early in hopes of receiving palliatives, a reflection of the economic challenges faced by many Nigerians. Archbishop Okoh described the event, which was intended to provide relief, as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the need for better systems to ensure the safety of citizens during such distributions.
The Maitama tragedy follows two other devastating stampedes earlier this month:
On December 18, during a Christmas funfair in Ibadan, a stampede claimed the lives of 35 children, with six critically injured. The event was organized to distribute food and cash to over 5,000 children.
In Anambra State, a rice distribution event led to the deaths of 22 people, leaving 32 others injured.
Archbishop Okoh called these incidents “heartbreaking” and stressed the urgent need for improved crowd control measures during charitable activities to prevent future occurrences…
