Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele defended the National Assembly’s ratification of President Tinubu’s emergency proclamation in Rivers State, stating it was necessary to prevent chaos. Speaking at Ekiti State University’s convocation, he emphasized that emergency rule is an extraordinary measure meant to ensure peace and stability, criticizing those who vilified the decision. He noted that the National Assembly’s intervention significantly reduced political tensions and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to national security and governance. Bamidele argued that the decision was taken in the country’s best interest and urged critics to seek legal redress if dissatisfied.
Bamidele also condemned opposition attacks on the National Assembly, dismissing them as emotional and politically motivated. He asserted that legislative collaboration with the executive does not undermine democracy but strengthens governance. He reiterated the Assembly’s focus on national stability, legal reforms, and social development, including improving education, housing, and economic opportunities. At the event, university officials praised alumni contributions, including infrastructure projects facilitated by Bamidele, and celebrated the institution’s recognition as Nigeria’s top state university.
