Nepal’s Prime Minister resigned after 19 people were killed in protests sparked by a social media ban and anger at corruption.

Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, resigned on Tuesday following violent protests triggered by a government ban on major social media platforms and mounting anger over corruption. At least 19 people were killed and hundreds injured on Monday after police used deadly force against demonstrators, sparking some of the worst unrest the country has seen in decades.

Despite lifting the ban on Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X late Monday night, tens of thousands of young protesters—dubbed the “Gen Z movement”—continued to flood Kathmandu and other cities, defying curfews and clashing with riot police. Protesters stormed and set fire to the federal parliament building, while Oli’s home and other political offices were also attacked.

“This is not just a death of 19 youths, it is murder. The government’s hands are stained with blood,” said protester Tanuja Pandey, 24. Amnesty International condemned the use of live ammunition, while the UN called for a transparent investigation.
