PALESTINE’S Red Crescent described “tragic conditions” at the el-Amal hospital in Khan Younis today after Israeli bombs hit a neighbouring house, killing 14.
Israel continued its onslaught on the besieged Strip as UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres appealed to the security council to impose a ceasefire, saying the war posed a threat to world peace.
Mr Guterres said no war in history had ever killed so many UN personnel: “More than 130 of my colleagues have already been killed, many with their families. This is the largest single loss of life in the history of our organisation.”
And battles on the Lebanon-Israel border, missiles fired at a US base in Iraq today and the attacks on shipping in the Red Sea all pointed to the war’s potential to spread, he warned.
A security council vote on an immediate ceasefire is due this evening, but the United States has previously vetoed such resolutions.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said the official Palestinian death toll from the war had now reached 17,487, 70 per cent of them women or children.
Israel launched its air and ground offensive with the stated goal of eliminating Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007 and carried out a deadly attack on Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 Israelis.
