Federal court in Manhattan has charged New York City Mayor Eric Adams on criminal charges, people with knowledge of the case told CNBC on Wednesday night.
For the time being, the indictment is sealed; however, it charges Adams, at least in part, with illegal activity connected to contributions made to his mayoral candidacy in 2021.
According to a source, the indictment details contributions to Adams’ campaign totaling up to $20 million that came from the matching money scheme the city’s Campaign Finance scheme provides politicians in exchange for modest gifts from New Yorkers.
Adams, a former police captain, is the first member of his administration and at least the second mayor of New York to face criminal charges while still serving in office.
