President Joe Biden looked relieved while addressing the nation on Thursday following President-elect Donald Trump’s dominant victory over Vice President Kamala Harris this week.
Biden’s remarks from the White House were his first public comments since Tuesday’s election.
“For over 200 years, America has carried on the greatest experiment in self-government in the history of the world,” Biden said. “That’s not hyperbole, that’s a fact.”
Biden said he had already spoken to Trump and congratulated him on his victory.
“I assured him that I direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition,” Biden said, later adding: “On January 20, we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power here in America.”
Biden called for Americans to stop seeing each other as adversaries but as fellow Americans — remarks that come just days after he called tens of millions of Trump supporters “garbage.”
