A councillor has apologised for calling his colleagues a ‘bunch of w*****s’ in a row over business district improvements.

Scotsman John Divers used the strong language after fellow representatives voted to withhold backing for the Elgin BID (Business Improvement District).

The Labour official, first elected to Moray Council in 1999, had served as the authority’s board delegate for more than a decade.

But in a vote, 16 councillors abstained on whether Elgin BID should represent the town’s businesses for another five years, against the recommendation of council officers.

Just three councillors agreed to back the original plans at Tuesday’s meeting prompting the outburst from Cllr Divers.
