Uncertainty surrounds Eric Chelle’s future as Super Eagles coach amid conflicting reports—NFF denies exit rumors while sources claim he may terminate his contract early.
Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle is reportedly considering resigning as Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach just two months after his appointment, plunging the team into fresh uncertainty.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) named Chelle in January on a two-year deal, but journalist Osasu Obayiuwana reports that the coach may terminate his contract due to doubts over his long-term future. “Sources within the NFF say uncertainty over his fate beyond the World Cup qualifiers has led to a dramatic change of heart,” Obayiuwana stated. The NFF has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the situation.
However, an NFF board member dismissed the claims, telling The Punch, “There is nothing like that… It is all fake news.”
Nigeria’s World Cup hopes remain in jeopardy, with the Super Eagles fourth in Group C. Chelle faces mounting pressure ahead of September’s decisive qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa.
