‘May Nigeria not happen to you’

BRIEF NOTE by Tutor Osayande

I often find it repulsive when people use the above statement in prayer or wish for their friends or family members. It makes me ask myself if Nigeria as a landmass has any role in our woes or if the occupants (Nigerians) are the real culprits.

Whichever way you choose to look at it, with the happenings around us, one cannot but take that prayer point seriously.

A fortnight ago, I went to a particular motor park to send books to Port Harcourt. When I got there, I asked for one of their drivers who I was used to. The response I got sent cold shivers down my spine.

“Ah, you did not hear?” He began. My heart skipped, as I knew the news would be unpalatable. I tightened my fist in preparation for the bad news.

“He was among those whose cars got burnt at Ologbo in the fire explosion reportedly caused by the petrol tanker that fell due to the bad road”.

This young man who felt he had settled himself after successfully paying for the Sienna car he got on higher purchase has been brought back to square one because Nigeria happened to him!

As you go out this week, may you not be a victim of bad governance, corruption and the ‘anyhowness’ of a nation called Nigeria.

May Nigeria not happen to you. Amen.

Have a great day.
