Brazil, four other countries where twins are most common

TRIBUNE

Twins, whether identical or fraternal, have always fascinated people. Certain regions in the world, particularly Africa, are known for having unusually high twin birth rates.

According to the World Population Review, there are countries where twins are most common.

1. Nigeria
Nigeria, specifically the Yoruba ethnic group, holds the record for the highest rate of twin births in the world. In the southwestern town of Igbo-Ora, often called the “Twin Capital of the World,” nearly every family has at least one set of twins.

 2. Benin

Benin also has an exceptionally high twin birth rate. Twins hold a cultural significance in Benin, where they are often celebrated and even revered in local traditions.

3. Central African Republic

The Central African Republic ranks high for twin births. Here, genetics play a more significant role. The region’s gene pool increases the likelihood of multiple births, particularly fraternal twins.

4. Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo also has a high rate of twin births. Genetic predispositions in this part of Africa make multiple births more common than in most regions globally.

5. Brazil

Interestingly, a town in Brazil called Cândido Godói is known for its unusually high number of twins.

Though lower than in some African countries, the phenomenon is linked to genetics and possibly environmental factors.
