The former president was talking to students at Hamilton College on Thursday when he told the crowd he “was in a deep deficit with my wife” after 8 years in the White House. The confession comes as the couple continues to battle divorce rumors.
Former President Barack Obama made strikingly honest admissions about his marriage to Michelle Obama during a Thursday discussion with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper. “I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” the 63-year-old confessed, acknowledging the strain his presidency (2009-2017) placed on their relationship.
Obama revealed he’s been working to repair their bond through “occasionally fun things” since leaving the White House. He said, “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”
In May 2023, he noted how being out of office helped, praising Michelle’s “forgiving” nature regarding his shortcomings.
Michelle, 61, had previously been equally candid, admitting in December 2022 that she “couldn’t stand” her husband for a decade while raising daughters Malia (now 26) and Sasha (23). “Marriage isn’t 50/50 – ever, ever,” she explained, describing how their partnership fluctuates between 70/30 and 60/40 splits.
Despite these challenges, the former First Lady emphasized their 30-year marriage’s resilience: “There are times I’m 70, he’s 30. There are times he’s 60, [I’m] 40. But guess what? Ten years — we’ve been married 30 — I would take 10 bad years over 30. It’s just how you look at it.”
