Civil society groups demand action after eight NSCDC officers were killed and a Chinese national abducted in Edo.
Civil society groups in Edo State have condemned Governor Monday Okpebholo’s silence following the killing of eight officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the abduction of a Chinese national.
The attacks on Friday saw gunmen hijack a New Edo Line bus on the Sobe–Afuze–Auchi Road in Owan West and later storm the BUA Cement facility in Okpella, where they killed NSCDC personnel.
Aliyu Umweni of the Edo Civil Society Organisations said, “The state governor should at this time bother less with the 2027 elections and concentrate more on securing the lives of Edo people with the monthly security votes being collected.”
The Edo Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights urged the federal government to declare a state of emergency, describing the insecurity as “a landscape where fear rules.”
Other stakeholders called for CCTV surveillance revival, improved policing, and urgent action to prevent protests.
