Former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized that Nigeria cannot make significant progress without fundamental changes in governance.
On Friday, while hosting six members of the House of Representatives led by Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga of Imo State’s Ideato North and South Federal Constituency, Obasanjo expressed his concerns. The other attendees included Honourables Abdulmalik Danga (Adavi/Okehi), Dr. Usman Midala (Askira-Uba/Hawul), Hon. Peter Aniekwe (Anambra East/West), and Kama Nkemkanma (Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo) from various federal constituencies.
Obasanjo argued that addressing Nigeria’s issues requires a critical self-assessment by Nigerians and a commitment to doing what is right. He stated that proposals such as a single-term presidency, unified nationwide elections, and power rotation between regions are insufficient to set the country on the right path.
He highlighted that effective leadership and a dedicated team are essential for fostering development. Obasanjo suggested that within two and a half years, the nation could overcome its challenges if leadership and teamwork are correctly aligned. He stressed the importance of rethinking democracy and moving away from the Western Liberal Democracy model towards a more consensus-driven approach common in African systems.
He also underscored that real progress depends on changing mindsets, not just altering office terms. According to Obasanjo, electing leaders with integrity and proven ability is crucial, as the country will only advance with the right individuals in power.
