In response to the ongoing political crisis between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, calls have been made for the National Peace Committee to intervene and facilitate a resolution. Political commentator Jide Ojo highlighted this need during an interview with Saturday PUNCH in Abuja.
Ojo asserted that the solution to the crisis does not rest with local politicians, who have largely taken sides in the dispute. Instead, he advocates for the involvement of esteemed national figures known for their peacebuilding efforts.
“The National Peace Committee, which has a track record of mediating in electoral disputes, is well-equipped to address this issue,” Ojo said. He specifically recommended former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese Matthew Kukah as potential mediators, given their experience and credibility.
Additionally, Ojo suggested that other respected figures such as the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, and former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku could play crucial roles in the reconciliation process. Their involvement, he believes, would bring a balanced and effective resolution to the crisis.
