Bode George, a prominent leader in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has urged the federal government to be forthright with Nigerians about the status of fuel subsidy payments.
George emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the oil and gas sector, noting that the confusion surrounding the removal of the subsidy on premium motor spirit (commonly known as petrol) has left many Nigerians in a state of uncertainty.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of the subsidy removal when he took office in May of the previous year, there continue to be speculations and debates about whether the subsidy has indeed been eliminated.
On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, claimed in a post on X that the federal government was still secretly funding the subsidy.
Speaking from his office in Ikoyi, Lagos State, on Thursday night, the former PDP deputy national chairman highlighted that Nigerians are entitled to know the real situation in the sector.
“The federal government must be transparent. One day we’re told there’s a subsidy, the next day it’s gone—Nigerians deserve the truth,” he said.
