Damagum, emphasizing his upbringing to respect elders, criticized former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South leader Edwin Clark over recent comments on the political crisis within the Rivers State PDP, involving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Naija News reports that Clark, in an open statement, had called for Wike’s expulsion from the party to restore stability. Clark accused Wike of using his ties with President Bola Tinubu to pressure Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara and influence the PDP.
In a letter to the party leadership, Clark expressed his concerns about Wike’s behavior, stating that he could not remain silent while Wike continued to intimidate the governor. He urged the party to confront this unacceptable conduct to protect its integrity and members.
Clark highlighted that many party members, including the National Legal Adviser, were shocked by Damagum’s actions, accusing him and the National Secretary of facilitating Wike’s efforts to undermine Fubara’s government. He pointed to Wike’s recent statements at a local government event, where the minister allegedly admitted to working against the Rivers State government.
For months, governance in Rivers State has been nearly paralyzed by the ongoing political conflict between Wike and Fubara, both PDP members. This rift has divided the State House of Assembly, with one faction, led by Martin Amaewhule, supporting Wike, and another, led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, backing Fubara. Despite efforts by President Tinubu and other elder statesmen, reconciliation attempts have failed as both sides continue to clash.
