Paul Marchant has resigned as CEO of Primark following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior toward a woman in a social setting. Associated British Foods (ABF), Primark’s parent company, stated that Marchant “acknowledged his error of judgment and accepts that his actions fell below the standards expected” by the organization. Marchant, who had been CEO since 2009, apologized to the individual involved, the ABF board, and his colleagues at Primark.
In response to the resignation, ABF’s Chief Executive George Weston expressed, “I am immensely disappointed. Colleagues and others must be treated with respect and dignity. Our culture has to be, and is, bigger than any one individual.” Eoin Tonge, ABF’s finance director, will serve as Primark’s interim CEO.
