Regular ejaculation linked to lower prostate cancer risk, says expert

Frequent ejaculation may help reduce prostate cancer risk, according to Nigeria’s cancer control chief.

The National Coordinator of the National Cancer Control Programme, Dr. Uche Nwokwu, has said frequent ejaculation could reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Nwokwu told the News Agency of Nigeria that while research suggested a link between ejaculation and lower prostate cancer risk, it did not prove causation.

“Studies show men who ejaculate more than 20 times a month may have up to a 20 per cent reduced risk,” he said, citing a 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

He, however, warned that ejaculation alone cannot prevent the disease. “Other factors like age, family history, diet, and lifestyle play major roles,” he added.

Prostate cancer is Nigeria’s most common cancer in men, accounting for 14 per cent of cases and over 11,000 deaths in 2022.

Nwokwu urged men to adopt healthier lifestyles, undergo regular screening, and avoid misinformation.
