A survey conducted between 1995 and 1998 identified rats as having medicinal and spiritual properties, making them essential in treating ailments, enhancing fertility, and offering protection against supernatural forces.

A study by I.A. Ayodele and J.O. Fayenuwo has documented the widespread use of rodents—including Nile rats, Gambian giant rats, and house mice—in traditional medicine across South-West Nigeria. Surveys of 429 hunters, farmers, and healers revealed rodents treat ailments like infertility, gonorrhoea, and rheumatism, while also offering spiritual protection.

The Gambian giant rat (14.9%) and Nile rat (17%) were most cited. “Rodents are used in potions for healing, success, and even love attraction,” researchers noted. Methods include extracting body parts, blending with herbs, and ritual applications. The study, covering 29 of 34 rodent species, aims to guide conservation strategies amid rising demand.
