Researchers warn AI girlfriends may worsen isolation…

A BYU study has found that AI romantic companions are linked to higher rates of loneliness and depression, especially among young adults.

A new study has raised concerns about the impact of AI romantic companions on mental health, warning that such technologies may deepen loneliness rather than ease it.

Researchers from Brigham Young University, writing in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, surveyed 2,989 people and found that nearly one in five had used an AI chatbot for companionship. Among young adults aged 18 to 29, the figure rose to one in four.

The study also revealed that seven percent admitted to masturbating during AI chats, while 13 percent said they viewed AI-generated pornography. Men were more likely than women to consume AI porn, and younger adults were twice as likely as older ones to prefer AI over real relationships.

Lead researcher Brian Willoughby told PsyPost, “We found no evidence that AI use is helping people feel less alone or isolated.” Instead, findings suggested links between AI use, depression, and loneliness.
