Olowookere Victor Oluwaferanmi, a Nigerian man who recently tweeted about his academic achievements, has been given a PhD offer by an agency of the American government.
On Wednesday, Victor posted his WAEC and university results, drawing instant praise and goodwill on Twitter: he made 8 A’s in his WAEC result, and graduated with a first-class degree in Chemical Engineering.
He graduated with a 4.86/5.00 CGPA, winning 9 awards and scholarships. He had several A’s too in most of his university courses.
EducationUSA, part of a network of educational advising centers affiliated with the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, has made him an offer:
“Contact EducationUSA Advising center at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja if you are interested in pursuing your Masters/PhD in the United States. Send us a message or email AbujaEducationUSA@state.gov.”
He replied in a tweet that he had already emailed the agency, even as some Nigerians see the offer as another case of brain drain about to happen to their country. They wish him well anyway.
Earlier on the thread, Victor stated that he had a social life—for those who wondered if he ever did.
“Just to clarify, I did a whole lot of other things and picked up many skills while in school (AIESEC, product design, going out and having fun, networking, leadership roles, church work, etc). So no, you don’t have to abandon your social life for good grades.”
Victor’s work can be followed on Dillali.com, where he hosted a software that allows small and medium-scale businesses manage their finances.
