An odd-looking rodent could hold the secret to curing cancer and increased fertility in humans, scientists have claimed.
The shocking new find comes from a group of scientists led by Miguel Brieño-Enríquez, from the University of Pittsburgh.
A group of 27 naked mole rat pups and a 17-year-old queen rat was tested, alongside another female and her litter of eight.
It was found that, not only are they immune to cancer – which has been known in the science community for the last few years – they can also make humans more fertile.
The study is called “Postnatal oogenesis leads to an exceptionally large ovarian reserve in naked mole-rats”, and has been published on Nature.com.
It found that the rats are essentially born fertile due to something called oocytes, which is basically an immature form of egg cells.
The report states three possible reasons for this.
