Inside world's most dangerous gang and 'sociopath' who saw people 'as beetles'

Lurking in the shadows of the criminal underworld, deadly gangs run rampant across the globe.

From the well-documented Cosa Nostra, or the American Mafia, to the incredibly violent MS-13, there is one key rule when dealing with organised criminal enterprises – cross them at your peril.

In the US alone, there are an estimated 33,000 different gangs boasting more than one million members, the FBI reports.

But according to one of the world’s leading authorities on gangs, there’s one organisation that’s a whole other level of dangerous.

Peter Edwards, who specialises in reporting on organised crime for the Toronto Star in Canada, co-wrote the book, Business Or Blood: Mafia Boss Vito Rizzuto’s Last War, which spawned the Netflix series, Bad Blood.

He’s researched and met first hand some of the biggest and baddest mobs on Earth, and when asked to name the most dangerous, he didn’t have any hesitation is saying the notorious Medellín Cartel.

Answering the question, Peter, 67, said: “I think people that are connected to the Medellín Cartel because they’re totally objectifying other people.”

The Colombian drug cartel was founded and led by infamous cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar in 1967.

But it wasn’t until 1975 that the gang began trafficking the drug.

At its peak, the cartel, featured heavily in the Netflix show Narcos, was reportedly moving tens of tons of coke into the US every week and raking in a staggering $100 million a day.
