Kennedy family curse 25 years after US President’s son died in mystery plane crash

The death of the 38-year-old son of US President John F. Kennedy – himself assassinated aged 46 – triggered talk that the fabled family curse had struck again.

And the tragedy also led to plenty of wild theories about what happened on that fateful day, echoing those surrounding the notorious shooting of American leader JFK in Dallas, Texas, in 1963.

Famous for his cute salute to his father’s coffin on the day of the funeral, Kennedy Jr grew up to become a handsome magazine publisher and socialite.

He got his pilot license in 1998 and was at the controls of his new Piper Saratoga light aircraft at 8.38pm on July 16, 1999, when it took off from Fairfield, New Jersey, in poor visibility.

His glamorous fashion publicist wife Carolyn, 33 and sister-in-law Lauren Bessette, 34, were also on board.

The couple were on their way to a wedding, intending to drop Lauren off near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, on the way.
