Tinubu’s reforms are aimed at addressing past mistakes, says Information Minister

Information Minister Mohammed Idris has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is focused on correcting ineffective policies and decisions that have historically impeded Nigeria’s progress.

Idris shared this during a briefing with the Diplomatic Community on the nationwide protests in Abuja on Wednesday.

He remarked, “President Tinubu is tackling poor policies and dysfunctional choices with bold and effective solutions, aiming not to burden Nigerians but to drive sustainable growth and improve living standards. The current difficulties are seen as temporary.”

Idris emphasized that President Tinubu did not come into office to create hardships but to address long-standing issues with decisive reforms. He noted that the president took office during a particularly challenging time, with Nigeria spending 97 percent of its revenue on debt servicing, coupled with widespread poverty, rising unemployment, crumbling infrastructure, and insecurity.

In response to these challenges, the administration has implemented essential reforms to prevent economic collapse. The minister highlighted that the costly and unsustainable fuel subsidy had previously hindered investments in critical infrastructure, social services, and citizen welfare. Consequently, Tinubu made the difficult decision to eliminate the fuel subsidy and redirect those funds to vital sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security.

Idris acknowledged that the removal of the fuel subsidy and the adjustment of foreign exchange rates would entail some transitional difficulties, leading the Federal Government to establish comprehensive intervention programs to alleviate these challenges.
