SAHARA REPORTERS

Residents of Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State have lamented how they buy contaminated water they drink and use for every domestic activity at N60 per 25 litres gallon.

SaharaReporters had reported how the residents lamented that they had been battling with different kinds of waterborne diseases for over 30 years as a result of contaminated water they drink and use for every domestic activity.

A resident of the local government, Mallam Jabir, who spoke with SaharaReporters on the phone on Tuesday, said that though residents of the local council area have been calling on the state and the federal governments for intervention through their representatives, nothing has been done about their situation.

“I grew up here. It is my place and we have been going through this for the past 30 years. The government is aware. Everybody is aware of this issue but nothing has been done, “ Jabir said.

“To my knowledge, Yauri is the only local government I know is having such problem,” he added.

SaharaReporters had reported that residents and people of Kebbi South Senatorial District and Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency of Kebbi State petitioned the INEC, demanding a recall of their representatives in the National Assembly, Senator Garba Musa Maidoki and Hon. Garba Umar Uba, for their poor performance and neglect of their duties.

The petition dated August 7, 2024 and addressed to the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, was signed by over 90 voters/electorates of Yauri Local Government Area of the state.

The constituents, who noted that their petition was pursuant to sections 69 and 110 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), lamented that Maidoki and Umar Uba have failed to fulfill their duties and responsibilities to them.

According to the aggrieved constituents, despite being elected to advocate for their interests and improve their living conditions, the representatives have neglected their needs and concerns.

They stressed that they are suffering from severe neglect and abandonment, and that they are faced with deplorable conditions including bad roads, dilapidated schools, inadequate health facilities and displacements due to pervasive insecurity.
