Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has publicly criticized the reinstated Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, for alleging that $49.8 billion went missing during his administration. Sanusi, who was reinstated in 2013, alleged that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation failed to remit $49.8 billion to the Federation Account between 2012 and 2013.
However, he later reversed his claim and stated that $12 billion was discovered not to have been remitted within the period. Jonathan, speaking at the launch of a book by former Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Shamsudeen Usman, disagreed with some of the claims made by Sanusi.
He stated that Sanusi was not sacked but suspended because the Financial Reporting Council questioned the expenditure of the Central Bank under his tenure. Jonathan also shared a personal experience where the German Chancellor of Germany informed him that some money was missing during bilateral talks with African Union Presidents in Belgium.
