United crisis deepens as Rooney blasts Amorim’s tactics

Wayne Rooney criticised Manchester United’s decline under Ruben Amorim, citing poor results, tactical flaws and early fan walkouts after a heavy derby defeat.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney says the club has “got worse” under manager Ruben Amorim after a 3-0 derby loss to Manchester City left them 14th in the Premier League. Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November 2024, but nearly a year later United show little progress despite spending about £250m and adopting a 3-4-3 system.

“I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be on the manager and the players,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show. “But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression… We’re seeing none of that.”

Rooney highlighted fans leaving early and questioned Amorim’s midfield setup. “If you’re struggling, you have to put three in midfield and give yourself a chance to compete,” he added.

United’s 36% win rate under Amorim is their worst since World War Two. With only four points from four league games, Rooney warned, “Quite a lot of league seasons that is relegation form.”
