DAILY RECORD
An espresso a day could help stave off Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study.
Lattes, Americanos and cappuccinos are already the morning drink of choice for many, but there could be an extra health benefit in your daily jolt of espresso.
These shots of coffee could be beneficial against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, according to a new study. Researchers have found espresso can prevent a process in the brain believed to be involved in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers at the University of Verona found that espresso compounds inhibited the formation of these clumps – a process understood to be involved in the beginning of Alzheimer’s.
To test the effects, researchers pulled espresso shots from store-bought beans, then used a scanning technique nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to characterise their chemical makeup.
They chose caffeine and trigonelline, both alkaloids, the flavonoid genistein and theobromine, a compound also found in chocolate, to focus on in further experiments. These molecules, along with the complete espresso extract, were incubated alongside a shortened form of the tau protein for up to 40 hours.
