ABenjamin Button-style pill which could allow humans to “rejuvenate” and live disease-free is one step closer after scientists made a major breakthrough.
Boffins say the wonder medicine would only need to be taken once and are astounded by the results on mice. They have found a way to re-programme a type of white blood cell called a T-cell, which normally helps the immune system battle disease.
T cells help lower body weight and improve metabolism but also attack senescent cells which are responsible for scores of deadly diseases. A team from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, have genetically modified T-cells into so-called superior CAR T cells.
Mice who received a dose ended up living healthier lives with lower body weight, improved metabolism and were fitter, according to the study published in the journal Nature Aging (CORR). Assistant Professor Corina Amor Vegas said: “If we give it to aged mice, they rejuvenate. If we give it to young mice, they age slower.
“No other therapy right now can do this.”
