“Scientists express concern over potential mutation of 100% fatal ‘zombie deer disease’ to infect humans: Lack of contingency plans highlighted

NEW YORK POST

“Zombie deer disease,” or chronic wasting disease (CWD), is concerning scientists due to its potential to infect humans. First identified in Yellowstone National Park, it has spread to 33 US states, Canada, Norway, and South Korea.

CWD damages the brain, leading to behavioral changes, excessive salivation, and death, with no known treatment. Experts warn of unpreparedness for potential human transmission, primarily through consuming infected venison.

While no human cases have been reported, the disease could mutate like mad cow disease, which jumped from animals to humans. Research suggests CWD might be contagious among humans, emphasizing the need for further study and preventive measures.
