Scientists at the UK Atomic Energy Authority and Bristol University have created what they say is the world’s first carbon-14 diamond battery, which has the potential to power devices for thousands of years. The battery is based on the radioactive isotope carbon-14.

British scientists, including Nigerian-born engineers Fatimah Sanni and Eseosa Ekanem, have developed a groundbreaking diamond battery capable of powering devices for thousands of years. This innovative technology, resulting from collaboration between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the University of Bristol, utilizes the radioactive decay of carbon-14 encased within a diamond to generate low levels of power.

The carbon-14 diamond battery operates similarly to solar panels, capturing fast-moving electrons from the radioactive decay of carbon-14 to produce electricity. With a half-life of 5,700 years, carbon-14 ensures the battery’s longevity, making it suitable for applications where conventional batteries are impractical.

Potential applications for this technology include powering medical devices such as pacemakers and hearing aids, as well as satellites and spacecraft, where long-lasting, maintenance-free power sources are essential. The diamond encasing ensures safety by containing the radiation emitted during the decay process.
