Werner responds to Chelsea's imminent Lukaku transfer amid fears over role

Timo Werner has hailed Romelu Lukaku as one of the world’s best and claims he stands to benefit from Chelsea’s record signing.

The Belgian is edging towards a return to Stamford Bridge, seven years after leaving.

A £97.5m deal has been agreed with Inter Milan as Blues boss Thomas Tuchel seeks to add a new frontman.

He inherited a squad last term that included Werner, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham as attacking options.

But neither striker was able to be prolific which has forced Chelsea back into the market.

Lukaku’s arrival has led to suggestions Werner will have to accept a bit part role, with the Blues often playing one in attack.

Despite that the German is confident he and the Belgian can form a strong partnership with their differing styles.

“He’s probably one of the best three strikers in the world at the moment, no question,” said Werner.

“I don’t think we need to say too much about him. He’s a world-class striker who will benefit any team.

“I certainly think at Leipzig it always helped me having a big striker alongside me.

“I think that’s always good because I’m not the biggest and when you play on your own up front you obviously always have the attention of one or two brawny defenders.
