Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has welcomed the arrival of ‘excellent footballer’ Raphael Varane at Old Trafford and backed fellow new signing Jadon Sancho to become a ‘top player’ for the Red Devils.
French World Cup winner Varane was unveiled as a Man United player ahead of their opening Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Saturday.
The 28-year-old, who won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies at Real Madrid, has signed a four-year deal with the Red Devils after completing a £40m switch from the Bernabeu.
Varane will be expected to emerge as Maguire’s long-term centre-back partner and the England international insists his arrival is ‘really exciting’ for the club.
‘To bring players into this club, obviously of his calibre as well, it’s going to be really, really exciting,’ Red Devils skipper Maguire told PA.
‘Everyone in the squad is obviously looking forward to working with him. I think one thing that it does is it boosts our defensive options.
