Paris Saint-Germain are facing 10 long days as they anxiously watch the clock tick down until Kylian Mbappe becomes free to talk to other clubs, Real Madrid in particular.
As the French forward’s current deal expires in the summer, from January 1 he will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with other teams, something Los Blancos are well aware of and so too are PSG.
Barring any unexpected twists at this late hour, it now seems all but certain that Mbappe will enter the new year in control of his own destiny. The Parisian club haven’t given up hope yet, but it looks increasingly unlikely that a new contract will be signed in the coming days.
Everyone on edge
In the football world, anything can happen and it won’t just be a nervy few weeks for PSG. Real Madrid won’t rest easy either unless, or until, the 23-year-old puts pen to paper to commit his future to the Spanish capital.
It could be an even longer wait for all involved, however, as it is expected that Mbappe will not announce any decision early in January. He could even wait until the end of the season before making a public announcement.
Mbappe‘s ambition to play for Real Madrid one day is no secret, but in a recent interview with Paris Match he was giving little away.
“Personal ties are much more exciting [than money],” said Mbappe.
“In life, experiences are what count, more than accumulating money.
“I want to travel, meet other players, discover other cultures.”
