Lewis Hamilton says he would be open to investing in Manchester United with Mercedes joint-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
British billionaire Ratcliffe, a part owner of the Mercedes F1 team via his company Ineos, has confirmed he would be interested in buying the Old Trafford club from the deeply-unpopular Glazer family. Last month, a statement released on behalf of Ratcliffe said: “If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer.”
Hamilton is close to Ratcliffe, whom he describes as a ‘partner’ at Mercedes, and is interested in investing in sports teams. Earlier this year he named as part of Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium, who were keen on purchasing Chelsea.
The seven-time world champion, who is actually an Arsenal fan, was said to be interested in investing in the Blues. However, the Broughton-led attempt buy Chelsea failed to materialise, with a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital agreeing a deal to buy the Stamford Bridge club in May.
Since then it has been announced Hamilton will become a part-owner of the Denver Broncos NFL franchise, but seems he isn’t finished there.
Asked ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix if he would be interested in being part of takeover at Old Trafford alongside Ratcliffe, he said: “It’s the first time I’ve heard of it, so I haven’t had time to catch up with Jim since I was in Namibia [during F1’s summer break], which I need to do because he goes to Namibia quite often…
