Manchester City have made history by defeating Inter Milan to win the Champions League, but do Liverpool now qualify for next season’s competition as a result?

Manchester City made history on Saturday night as they beat Inter Milan 1-0 to finally get their hands on the Champions League trophy. 

Midfielder Rodri was the hero as he notched the second-half winner, after Kevin De Bruyne was forced off with an injury earlier in the game. 

The victory capped off an historic season for Pep Guardiola‘s side, who have now claimed the coveted Treble having also won the Premier League and FA Cup.   

In winning the Premier League, City of course secured qualification to next season’s Champions League. But having now also won the title in Istanbul, City will head into the 2023-24 campaign in the place reserved for the holders.

So, with the Premier League already receiving four Champions League spots, will the side who finished fifth – Liverpool – now qualify for next year’s tournament? Mail Sport provides the answer below.

Do Liverpool now qualify for the Champions League?

As stated, City’s place in the competition next season was decided before their victory over Inter Milan.  

But Liverpool, having seen off competition from Brighton to finish fifth, will not get a place in next season’s Champions League. 

Instead, the spot is transferred to the winner of the highest-ranked national league in the UEFA coefficient without an automatic group-stage qualifying spot. 

Traditionally, this would be the country ranked 11th that would be placed directly in the group stage rather than having to qualify. 

Currently, Serbia occupies 11th place in the table. However, the champions of the Serbian top division are already guaranteed a place. This is because Russia is ranked 10th. The nation’s clubs remain banned from European competitions following the invasion of Ukraine. 

Therefore, the champions of the 12th-ranked country will now get a bye, which is Ukraine…
