Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana committed a calamitous error to give Bayern Munich their opener en route to Champions League defeat – but his reaction has earned a positive response
DAILY STAR
While Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Bayern Munich might have started in nightmarish fashion for Andre Onana, the Manchester United No. 1 succeeded in salvaging some of his reputation by night’s end.
It was the goalkeeper’s gaffe that handed Bayern an unexpected lead after a routine Leroy Sane shot crept under Onana’s body. Erik ten Hag & Co. went on to lose 4-3 at the Allianz Arena following a valiant comeback effort in the second half, but the result could have been far different had it not been for that avoidable opener.
But rather than look for excuses or run for cover, Onana was praised for wanting to perform media duties after the game and address his error. The 27-year-old shouldered responsibility for a narrow defeat in Munich and pledged to improve and avoid similar setbacks in future.
“It’s difficult to lose this way, because in the beginning we started very good, and after my mistake we lost control of the game,” he told TNT Sports reporter Jules Breach. “It’s a difficult situation for us [and] for me especially, because I’m the one who let the team down.
“The team was very good, I think. Because of me, we didn’t win this game… We just have to move on, this is the life of a goalkeeper, and we didn’t win today because of me.”
Onana went on to say ‘the team went down’ because of his mistake for Sane’s goal, adding he ‘has to learn from it’. United have fewer than 72 hours before they visit Vincent Kompany’s Burnley in a return to Premier League duties on Saturday.
