Brazil lose World Cup qualifier at home for first time ever

TRIBUNA

The World Cup champions have dealt Brazil their first-ever home defeat in a World Cup qualifier. It took 65 games, a run that included 51 victories, 13 draws and now one defeat.

In a rough game marred by violence in the stands, Argentina won thanks to a goal from Nicholas Otamendi. What probably hurt even more for the home fans was the fact they lost the game at Maracana to their no.1 rival.

Things aren’t going well at all for Brazil who are currently sixth out of 10 in the league standings with their last three games ending in defeats. Ecuador who had been docked three points before the start of the qualifying campaign are one spot above.

Even being sixth they still qualify directly — only the bottom three get nothing. However, what is worrying is the form of Selecao and the uncertainty around their head coach situation.

They just can’t get going with the interim head coach Fernando Diniz who juggles the post with his work at Fluminense whom he’s just led to the Copa Libertadores win.
