Aston Villa have officially completed the signing of Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for a reported fee of £35 million. The 22-year-old Dutch defender has put pen to paper on a six-year contract, keeping him at Villa Park until 2030.
Maatsen, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, played a pivotal role in helping the Bundesliga club reach the Champions League final. He also contributed three goals and two assists across 23 appearances in all competitions during his time in Germany.
The versatile defender, capable of playing on either side of the back four or as a winger, found it challenging to break into Chelsea’s first team under former manager Mauricio Pochettino. As a result, he made just one Premier League start during the first half of last season.
Maatsen’s arrival at Aston Villa marks the club’s second signing of the summer, following the capture of striker Lewis Dobbin from Everton. Villa’s fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season has secured them a spot in the upcoming Champions League campaign, further attracting top talent to the club.
