Euro 2024 Shocker: Switzerland eliminates defending champions Italy in 2-0 victory

Defending champions Italy were knocked out of Euro 2024 on Saturday, beaten 2-0 by Switzerland in their last 16 match in Berlin.

In a stunning upset at Euro 2024, Switzerland has knocked out the defending champions Italy with a commanding 2-0 victory in their round of 16 match at Berlin’s Olympiastadion. Goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas on either side of halftime secured the Swiss team’s place in the quarterfinals, ending Italy’s hopes of retaining their European title.

Italy’s performance was uncharacteristically sluggish, as they struggled to gain control of the game, while Switzerland displayed early dominance and capitalized on Italy’s mistakes. Freuler’s slightly deflected effort in the 37th minute gave Switzerland the lead, with Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma unable to save it.

Just 27 seconds into the second half, Switzerland’s Ruben Vargas scored the second goal, further cementing their victory.

The Swiss ended a run of 11 matches without a win against Italy dating back to 1993.
