Newcastle transfer: Howe on Gordon’s future – I would welcome him back with three arms if I had them

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe believes Liverpool’s pursuit of Anthony Gordon is over after he expressed his confidence the England international is no longer unsettled by the speculation linking him with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool and Newcastle discussed a potential deal for Gordon last month as the Tyneside club struggled to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules, but no bid was made.

Gordon, though, was distracted by the talk of joining the club he supported as a boy and told teammates while away on England duty that the move was going to happen.

In turn, sources have told Telegraph Sport the player’s representatives were desperately trying to revive the deal in the last few days of June, without success.

That had led to concerns within St James’ Park that Gordon would start to agitate to leave when he returned to Newcastle for pre-season training later this month, but Howe – who has spoken regularly with the player – does not believe that will be the case.

Newcastle solved their PSR concerns with the sale of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and will reject any fresh interest in Gordon this summer.
