Manchester United reignite pursuit of Frenkie de Jong amidst transfer talks

Frenkie de Jong is once again linked with a move to Manchester United. According to reports, Manchester United have re-engaged in negotiations to finalize a deal for the Barcelona midfielder.

The Red Devils have made two signings so far this summer: Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and French center-back Leny Yoro from Lille.

Rumors had suggested that Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich could be the next acquisition, but discussions over his transfer fee appear to have stalled, despite personal terms being agreed upon. Other center-back targets include Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Benfica’s Antonio Silva, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte and Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat are being considered for defensive midfield roles.

Recent reports from Spain indicate that Manchester United have renewed their interest in De Jong. The headline suggests that United manager Erik ten Hag and Barcelona president Joan Laporta have reached an agreement, though the exact financial details remain undisclosed. It is noted that Manchester United are prepared to exceed €80 million (£67 million) for the player.

Manchester United’s renewed interest comes after initial speculation seemed to wane, with Ten Hag keen on adding De Jong as a premium partner for Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in midfield. Laporta and Barcelona’s sporting director Deco are reportedly open to letting De Jong leave due to financial pressures, as other sales have stalled.

However, Manchester United face a challenge as De Jong is reportedly not enthusiastic about moving to Old Trafford, having previously turned down a move to the Premier League club.

To facilitate the transfer or fund other deals, Manchester United might consider selling Jadon Sancho. Ligue 1 expert Jonathan Johnson recently updated that PSG is interested in Sancho, noting that the club is looking for star power on the left side following Kylian Mbappé’s departure.
