Liverpool 2-2 Manchester United: ‘An opportunity lost for Liverpool’

Liverpool missed the chance to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United.

It will feel like an opportunity lost for Liverpool. They will have seen Arsenal’s result last night and expected to come into this game and win.

There was too much of a feeling coming into the game that Liverpool would whack Manchester United aside. People were talking about how many goals they were going to score. But it wasn’t to be.

How it stands

Liverpool are six points clear and have a game in hand over second-placed Arsenal.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “It could have been a lot worse if we are absolutely honest with ourselves. They had a big chance in the end that could have been a lot worse than where we are now. I’m definitely disappointed with dropping points at home but it is what is and we have to move on and we will.”

“We found the 2-1 and then it is about trying to manage the game and keep the ball for longer than three and four passes. We lost the ball too easily at times and then we were more open than we should have been. We’re not perfect, we’re still learning and we have to learn from this as well.”

On whether they came into the game underestimating Manchester United: “That’s all the media. Media talk. It’s nothing to do with us. We prepared for a very tough game like we have seen today. We didn’t think any of that.”

On being in a strong position when you look at the league table: “We look at the next game, we don’t look at the league table.”

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, talking to Sky Sports, said: “The result is not good enough. The performance was not as good as we wanted but at the end of the day it was a fair result.

“We didn’t play as we wanted and conceded too many chances and had opportunities to score more goals.

“The effort was there, the mentality was there because we came back but when you’re 2-1 at 75 minutes you have to defend better and we couldn’t do it so we have to think about what we did wrong and move on.”

Comments:

TAA needs to be rested and given time to sort his head out, Bradley needs to be given a run again, he was infinitely better than TAA today.

Worrying trend is Liverpool going behind in games, none of the pundits are talking enough about this. It started under Klopp least season and has continued this season, and eventually we ran out of steam last year. Slot needs to address it asap!
