A clueless fan holding up a sign caused the ‘worst Tour de France crash’ some cycling enthusiasts had ever seen on Saturday, with a huge pile-up of dozens of riders colliding late in the opening stage of the iconic race.
The speeding peloton had around 43kms to go of the Grand Départ stage through Brittany in northern France.
