Elon Musk has been left with egg on his face after his Twitter rebrand saw him use a letter already trademarked by Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg.
Experts reckon that both the Facebook parent company and Microsoft already have intellectual property rights for the letter X, despite Musk choosing the character as the social network’s new name.
Musk announced the change yesterday (Sunday, July 23), taking to the platform to write: “And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”
The 52-year-old tycoon later tweed an image of himself in front of a Tesla X background with his arms crossed forming an X, saying: “Not sure what subtle clues gave it away but I like the letter X.”
The news comes as part of Musk’s plan to transform the site into an “everything app”, providing multiple services through the platform.
Linda Yaccarino, who Musk hired to be the chief executive of Twitter last month, said: “Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.”
