“They will all be there watching the CCTV so that anybody who is trying to take his life on the third mainland bridge, they will spot the person. With this CCTV, there will be no more excavation of sand under the deck around the pies.”

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, says closed-circuit television (CCTV) has been installed on the Third Mainland Bridge to curb suicides and monitor illegal sand excavation.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Umahi explained that surveillance systems were deployed both on and beneath the bridge deck to track suspicious activity.

“We have put CCTVs down under the deck so that anybody who is excavating sand within the 10-kilometre radius will be spotted,” he said. “Anybody who is trying to take his life… they will spot the person.”

Security agencies, including the police, navy, and army, will monitor the feeds from an examination house on the bridge’s bank.

On Lagos’ Independence Bridge, recently reopened, Umahi confirmed it was shut after a structural failure caused by a leaking sand fill under its approach slab.

He also announced that a 30km stretch of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be ready for President Bola Tinubu to inaugurate by May 25, 2025.
