Tens of thousands protested alleged corruption in Manila on Sunday, with clashes leading to arrests and injuries as authorities urged calm.

Thousands gathered in Manila on Sunday to protest alleged corruption in government projects, with several clashes reported between demonstrators and police.

Protesters converged at the People Power Monument and Rizal Park, with officials estimating 49,000 people in Luneta Park, while organizers claimed turnout reached 80,000. Demonstrators, including students and activist groups, demanded accountability, transparency in assets and liabilities, and bank secrecy waivers from public officials.

On Mendiola Street, riot police blocked marches condemning alleged irregularities in flood control projects. Authorities said 20 people were detained and 39 officers injured after protesters threw stones and set a truck ablaze.

“We respect the public’s right to peaceful assembly, but we strongly appeal to everyone to remain calm and refrain from violence,” police said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed police to show “maximum tolerance,” while Manila’s mayor imposed a youth curfew amid the unrest.
