President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an extension for Kemi Nanna Nandap, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), despite her nearing the mandatory retirement threshold. The Presidency, in a statement on Monday, justified the move by citing her contributions to border security and immigration reforms, but the decision appears to contravene established public service regulations.
Under the Public Service Rules (PSR), officers must retire after 35 years of service or upon turning 60, whichever comes first. Nandap, who joined the NIS in 1989, will complete 35 years in 2024, making her legally ineligible to remain in office until the new expiration date of December 2026. The extension bypasses standard retirement protocols, including mandatory pre-retirement procedures, raising questions about adherence to civil service guidelines.
